Choosing Your Dogs Name
Choosing a pet’s
name can be both fun and nerve-racking! A puppy needs a name that they
can recognize and you need to name him something that has meaning to you
and your family! This could set you off searching on an endless list of
names most of which you will have NEVER heard of before and some you never
want to hear again. Before you begin, you need to think about this new
addition to your household is he/she a family pet, a show dog? How about
a guard dog? Will this be a Helping Dog or a Seeing Eye dog? All this should
be taken into consideration so that you can find that just perfect name!
The Family Pet
If this is a family pet and the kids are little, they like names like Lady,
Tramp, Scooby-do, Snoopy or Princess because they see them in Walt Disney
movies or are on T.V. Get them together and let them offer names they like,
then as a family you can choose the right one that fits. This may take
several days, you need to watch your new addition and see what tendencies
he has. A name like Princess to a puppy that can’t stop from tripping over
her ears just isn’t going to work! The teen-agers will want to name him
after singers, rappers, movies and movie stars like Madonna, Beastie, Coolio,
Jedi, Darth Vader, Chewy, Indiana Jones. This could get real interesting
may the force be with you!
The Bachelor’s Dog
If you’re a bachelor, you will have the most fun naming your new dog! You
are the one who nothing is expected from and to expect the unexpected!
Therefore, you have a wide range of ideas to choose from! Themes are wonderful,
how about Movies for Men!! What is your favorite movie Animal house, The
Gambler, Popeye or Rambo? Are you a sports nut? Well then how about Bronco,
Goal, Caddy, Touchdown, Magic or Speedy. Work-a-holic? Then name it after
something in your field like a Lawyer how about Justice, Torts, Jury, Brief
or Judge. Naming your new pet after drinks is also fun. How about Gin,
Bailey, Whiskey, Rowdy, Boozer, Brandy, and Brewsky heck we even found
a dog name of Barf! If you are looking for that perfect girl, you can name
your dog Flirt, Mozart, Curious even Lucky. You are only limited by your
own imagination. Have fun!
The Bachelor-ette’s Dog
You, like the bachelor have a vast array of ideas. You can use the above
themes like Movies for Gals and name your pet after your favorite male
movie star like: Vaughn (Alias), Cruise (Tom), Bacon (Kevin) and Duke (John
Wayne). Attitude is also a theme, how about these names: Piranha, Primo,
Blondie, Beauty, Babe, Brassy, Bubbles, Jezebel or Salsa. Tell it like
it really is! Like your profession? Find a name that fits your job. Chef:
Brownie, Fudge, Pumpkin, Raisin, Muffin, Truffles or Chocolate. Or that
perfect drink when you all go out on Saturday night. Champagne, Kahlua,
Martini, Daiquiri, Schweppes even Tipsy.
Guard Dogs
If this new addition has aspirations to be the official watchman in the
household, you need to name him right. If you need to tell him to attack,
yelling MUFFIN SIC HIM! just isn’t going to impress your attacker! He needs
a strong name like Sampson, Admiral, Baron, Schwarzkopf or Hercules. You
got the idea now, no more of those sissy names for a dog who has the sole
responsibility to defend you at all costs! Go back in history, who were
the great warriors? That is the name you’re looking for.
Show Dogs
You folks have the most interesting of names! In fact, they sound like
horse names. When I was younger, I had a horse named, Mont Eagles Sierra
Madre of El Raposa. If that isn’t a mouthful then what is? Show dog people
find the darnedest ideas and themes. We will never keep up with you on
the ideas you come up with, but if you want a taste of show dog names here
you go pick a theme. Seasons! Okso you have a new dog that was born in
the fall. We can start with Autumn, Indian Summer, August Moon and Windy.
Born in the summer? Summer Breeze, Gentle rain, June Bug. We all know that
you don’t stand outside waiting to call in Gentle Rain yelling Gentle Rain
come on now, time to come inside! It is really Rainy lets go! But who are
we to argue! We know that Gentle Rain will soon have puppies and you will
continue the tradition with Rain Drop, Muddy Sneakers and Sunshine.
Helper Dogs
Helper or Service dogs are truly an extension of one’s self. If you are
raising a puppy for this purpose, you are to be commended. There is much
work that needs to be done in the short time you have them. Helper Dogs
do a wonderful service for their human companion. Their name needs to be
easy to say and able to be a woman’s dog as well as a man’s dog. Examples
would be Sandy, Heidi, Lady, Mandy, Midnight, Sierra or Nutmeg. Animals
respond best to one or two syllable names.
Something Fun
If everything above doesn’t appeal to you, don’t worry there is still one
more idea. They always say that Laughter is the Best Medicine, so go for
it. Do you have an English sheepdog name him London Britches! A Dachshund
could be named Daddy Long Legs. Your sense of humor could include: Doggie
Bowser, Duddley Puddles and Queen Elizabassett! Keep going it’s up to you
now!
Pet Tips
- Choose a dog name that your pet can recognize easily. Pets respond
best to one or two syllable names.
- Select a dog name that is easily to say and to call.
- Avoid names that sound like commands and members of the family.
Sit, Stay, Come, Fetch, Down are all common commands. Zoe sounds too
much like NO and it would be difficult for your dog to determine which
you were saying.
- Study your dog’s behavior before naming him, it helps you pick
out just the right name. Check for personality, appearance and affection
to see if your chosen name fits.
- As soon as possible, pick up that ID Tag and make his trip back
home successful if he decides to wander.
Be Creative
We hope we have inspired you to think up your own name, be original! Pick

you know it
